Patliputra University has just announced significant administrative and academic changes following its 26th Syndicate meeting. From increasing PhD coursework fees to starting PG classes in rural colleges, students are set to experience a number of new features.
If you're a research scholar or planning a Master's from PPU, the rules are no longer the same.
Saturday's meeting, chaired by Vice Chancellor Upendra Prasad Singh, saw significant decisions. The university claims these reforms are for academic excellence but students have a simple question: How will this impact our expenses and our classes?
After carefully reviewing the Syndicate's report, we've compiled three of the most important updates for you.
1. PhD Coursework Fees Increased by 150% (From ₹2,000 to ₹5,000)
The biggest point of the meeting was that the fees for PhD research scholars have been significantly increased. The Syndicate unanimously decided to revise the fees for the six-month PhD coursework.
This fee, which was previously ₹2,000, has now increased to ₹5,000.
This will affect scholars from all streams like Arts, Science and Commerce.
Is this beneficial?
According to Registrar Abu Bakar, this increase was made to improve research quality and strengthen students' academic standing. The university plans to use this extra money to upgrade research facilities.
In simple terms, scholars could now receive slightly better labs, better library access, or overall improved research support that alone would justify the extra ₹3,000.
2. PG Classes Will Now Start in Rural Colleges (Patna & Nalanda Districts)
This decision will be very helpful for students who used to tire of traveling to Patna daily. The Syndicate has approved that post-graduate (PG) teaching will now begin in six rural constituent colleges in Patna and Nalanda districts.
What used to happen before?
Students from semi-urban areas like Mokama, Barh and Hilsa used to have to travel to Patna city or the university headquarters to pursue a master's degree. Now this burden will be reduced.
Courses like MA, MSc and MCom will now be available directly nearby.
What will be the benefit?
- Save a lot of money on travel and rent
- No more daily commuting from rural areas
- Reduced extra expenses
What should you pay attention to?
Keep an eye on the notice board of your local college. It's quite possible to find colleges in areas like Barh, Mokama and Hilsa and this will help you determine if your college is included in those centers.

3. Efforts to Address Faculty Shortages in Constituent Colleges
Students often complain that classes are not regular due to a shortage of teachers. The Syndicate addressed this issue and officially approved the appointment of six new assistant professors.
In addition, the services of principals already posted to some constituent colleges have also been formally approved.
What will this achieve?
The daily operations of the college will run a little more smoothly, delays in document signing, approvals and administrative work may be reduced. Students will find it easier.
Our Analysis: Is This Good or Bad for PPU Students?
To be honest, the response is mixed.
The good thing Starting PG classes in rural colleges is a huge advantage for students. This will increase access to higher education, especially for those who come from remote areas and had to relocate to Patna. Now, it will be possible to earn a Master's without migrating.
The slightly difficult part The jump in PhD fees is quite high. From ₹2,000 to ₹5,000, this difference definitely seems huge. Now the university will have to prove that this money is actually being used to improve facilities for students.
What Should You Do Now?
- If you're planning to pursue a PhD → adjust your budget a little for the next semester
- If you're from a rural area and want to pursue a PG → don't rush to move to Patna, you might find the required PG course available in your local college next semester
We'll share the official list of those 6 rural colleges here as soon as the notification comes, so stay connected.
