The HS Semester 3 exams have commenced today in West Bengal, engaging approximately 6.6 lakh students statewide. This exam season marks a significant shift with the introduction of a new semester system for the first time. Running from September 8 to September 22, these exams pave the way for Class 11 and 12 students. Only those who have successfully cleared Semesters 1 and 2 of Class 11 are eligible, indicating a high level of preparation required to reach this stage.

The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education has outlined precise timings for the exams. Most subjects are scheduled from 10:00 AM to 11:15 AM. Additional time is allocated for creative disciplines such as Music, Visual Arts and Vocational subjects, extending until 11:45 AM.
Gender Participation Trends
A notable trend this year is the significant participation of female students. With 79,582 more girls than boys appearing for the exams across all 23 districts, female students are demonstrating a strong presence in this academic milestone.
Strict Security Measures for Fair Exams
To ensure fairness and transparency in such a large scale examination, the Council has implemented stringent security protocols:
- CCTV Surveillance: Cameras are installed in supervisors rooms and at main gates.
- Metal Detector Checks: Entry points feature thorough checks using metal detectors.
- Prohibited Items: Mobile phones, calculators and other electronic gadgets are strictly banned.
- Consequences of Violations: Any candidate caught with prohibited items faces immediate cancellation of their enrolment.

Important Exam Rules for Students
To facilitate a smooth examination process, the Council has clarified essential rules for students:
- Arrival Time: Students must reach the exam center by 9:00 AM.
- Writing Tools: Only blue or black ballpoint pens are permitted for OMR sheets.
- Seating Arrangement: Seats are arranged in an S pattern with a maximum of two students per bench.
- Gender-Based Allocation: Boys will not be seated in girls schools unless absolutely necessary.
- Distribution Monitoring: Question papers and OMR sheets are distributed under strict supervision to prevent duplication.
- Invigilation Standards: Permanent teachers are prioritized for invigilation with at least two invigilators per class (one per 20 students).
Paper Security Protocols
The West Bengal Council has established robust measures for question paper security. All papers are delivered in sealed, non transparent poly pouches. These packets are opened in the presence of students at 9:55 AM, with distribution of papers and OMR sheets occurring precisely at 10:00 AM to eliminate any possibility of leaks.

Despite potential rainfall in September, the Council has made comprehensive arrangements to ensure the safety of students, answer scripts and question papers during the exam period.
